▲ tag: Open notes: Milo's just kinda derpin' so go nuts? | Being out on the open field felt... odd. Maybe it was just because Milo had spent most of his life in the comforts of Ordon Village, or the Faron Woods, but Hyrule Field felt big. Too big. It was miles upon miles of wide open plains - and while Castle City's latest tech made it easy to cross, it was still a long way to travel.
And Milo wasn't traveling by car or by train. He wasn't even on horseback; he was on foot and while some people might have thought it foolish, he had his reasons. He'd stuck mostly to the woods, only venturing out to get his bearings and pick a new direction to travel in. The woods got dense fast, and it wasn't possible to take a horse through there. If he really wanted to stay hidden, a horse would just be a burden.
That didn't change the fact that this all sucked. He shouldn't be having to do this. He shouldn't have to go this far away from home - or where home had once been. Hell, if it wasn't for the mark on his hand, he might have been able to live in peace.
Well. There was also the fact that he was Hylian, which meant that everyone hated him and was out to get him. Some days, he found himself wishing that he'd been born human. Humans were okay. Once upon a time, he'd even wished he could have been born Gerudo, but that had changed after what had happened.
A smoldering house. Things burning, people burning. Everything he'd ever had - gone in the blink of an eye.
Shaking his head, Milo adjusted his hood, taking care to make sure that it covered his ears before continuing to amble along the edge of the field. He wasn't really sure where he was headed, or what was waiting for him, but it wasn't like he had any other choice. He just... had to keep moving. Keep pushing forward.
Maybe something good will happen. Maybe I'll meet somebody to travel with. That happens in all those old stories, so why can't it happen to me?

Gerudo

It was another one of those days. The tall Gerudo male had gone another day without anything substantial to eat. If he recalled correctly, it was the third day in a row. Water was plentiful, sure, but it was difficult to hunt the local fauna with only a sword. So Rheks had to make do with assorted berries and nutritional herbs he knew. It was enough to keep him alive but beyond that, hew as still hungry. Though he was big, as in muscular with broad shoulders, he was leaner than he had been in years. Probably ever since he began to fill out as a young adult. Looking down at himself, he sighed in self-disappointment.
His clothes were tarnished, torn and blood stained. He ran into a couple of Gerudo yesterday and had to fight them. He didn't kill them, which meant he was losing his touch, but they also landed a few blows as well. Rheks only had so much stamina these days due to his hunger. Isis would be metaphorically turning over in her grave if she saw him like this. The thought of disrespecting her spirit if he gave up kept him going. If he didn't find something of substance soon, he just might die.
Maybe if he was lucky, he'd come across people camping in the forest of Faron or traveling the fields. He would politely ask for food but if denied, he might just have to steal it. He was imposing enough, quite skilled in melee and unarmed combat. If threats wouldn't work, he'd have to resort to violence. That wasn't the right way to act but he wouldn't allow himself to die before he completed his destiny. As he returned to reality, he spotted someone lagging along the border of the Faron Woods. Maybe they had food. Steadying himself, and keeping his hands off his weapon, the Gerudo male purposefully strode towards the stranger, praying to the Goddesses they had food.

▲ tag: Rheks Mirajnotes: Milo's just kinda derpin' so go nuts? | His hand was itching.
The mark on the back of his hand didn't do much, but it was still obvious enough that he needed to cover it up. Bandages were kind of obvious for hiding things, so he'd settled for fingerless gloves. He still had enough dexterity to do everything he needed to be able to do while covering the blatantly obvious marking.
Milo absentmindedly scratched at the back of his hand, pausing as he took a moment to survey his surroundings. Nothing out of the ordinary -
- unless you counted the guy stalking in his direction as ordinary.
The Hylian blinked, his eyes going wide as he took in the sight of the person approaching him. Red hair, tan skin... if it wasn't for the fact that he was obviously a man, he might have been a Gerudo. Despite that, Milo couldn't shake the unease that clung to his mind, and he felt his right hand inching toward where his hatchet hung at his side. He didn't move any further on, though; what if this guy was friendly? He could use the company.
As he got closer, the nagging feeling just got worse, and Milo couldn't help but notice just how tall the man was. "Sweet Goddess, you're tall," he couldn't help but mumble, blue eyes wide as he stared at the redhead. "Are you looking for something? You don't seem like you're from around here."

The stranger seemed to spot Rheks as he made his way towards them. The person looked to be a traveler of sorts, which was good, travelers always had food. Rheks identified the stranger as a young man, probably a human. That was good at least, because he would have been greatly worried if it turned out to be a Gerudo. Pushing those thoughts to the back of mind, he noticed the young man was addressing him. That was also good, he preferred it if someone else initiated the conversation. Now for his well worded response.
"Yeah, being tall runs in my family." He had a deep baritone type of voice. "But yes, I am looking for something. I'm wondering if you have any food to spare?"
Rheks stood straight with his feet spread in a steady militaristic stance. His hands were clasped together in front of him and resting under his belt that cinched his tunic at his waist. It might look a little intimidating, especially with his torn and bloodstained clothes, but like mentioned before it was steady and it relaxed him to step back into how he was trained. Not to mention he could have his weapon drawn in one swift movement if it was needed. He doubted if it would be. He meant the stranger no harm, yet. He fervently hoped he wouldn't have to draw his weapon to get food.

▲ | "Yeah, being tall runs in my family."
"Lucky..." Hylians were short, and Milo was no exception. Sometimes, he wished he had a few more inches, but then again, it was easier to squeeze through narrow spaces when you were shorter. It was also easier to avoid people. There weren't a lot of crowds in Ordon, but Milo was certain that he could lose someone if he was being pursued in a crowded place.
And speaking of avoiding people... On closer inspection, this tall guy looked like he'd been avoiding people too. He was beat up and bloody, and Milo couldn't help the instinctual urge to pull his hood down further. The guy kinda reminded him of the guards stationed at the outposts...
"But yes, I am looking for something. I'm wondering if you have any food to spare?"
Food? The Hylian blinked, pursing his lips slightly as he eyed the taller man. "Uh, well I actually just ate what I had," he admitted sheepishly. "But it's not that hard to get food around here, if you know what you're looking for. C'mon, I'll show you a few tricks." As he spoke, Milo waved his hand toward the woods, turning to trot toward the comfort of the trees. This guy might be trying to jump him or something, but as long as they were in the forest, Milo was confident that he could get away.
Probably. Maybe. Hopefully. "Have you ever hunted before?"

It was unfortunate that the traveler carried no food, or no longer had any. That meant he was in the same predicament as Rheks. Nevertheless, he didn't need to draw his sword so at least something went good today. He intended to leave the stranger's presence and move but he mentioned he knew where food could be found, or how to get some. Now that piqued the Gerudo's interest. Instead of leaving, he nodded to the other male and stepped forwards to follow him as he moved into the forest.
As he walked, Rheks relaxed his stance to where his arms slightly swung at either side of his body. Though he was big, he stepped carefully and softly with his sandal-clad feet. His sandals were thick soled, about a couple of inches with thin rope crisscrossing up his legs to just below his knees. Even though the young man was moving at a jog, or something around there, Rheks' long strides allowed him to keep pace without going faster than a walk. Appearing to be relaxed, Rheks kept his eyes on his surroundings. One must never assume they are entirely alone. It took him a moment to respond as his thoughts always got ahead of him.
"Yes, actually, but with a bow. Alas, I do not have one in my possession. My au..." It hurt to talk about her. ", mentor never showed me how to set traps." To catch wildlife anyways. He knew how to set traps intended to injure or fatally wound the enemy but they don't work so well on animals.

▲ | "Yes, actually, but with a bow. Alas, I do not have one in my possession. My au... mentor never showed me how to set traps."
Milo frowned slightly, glancing back at the taller man curiously. He'd changed his sentence halfway through. Why? He was dying to know, but realistically he knew that someone he'd just met wouldn't exactly be eager to spill something like that right off the bat.
"M'kay. Well, hunting with traps and stuff isn't that hard. You don't even have to hunt with those; as long as you've got something sharp to throw, you'll be fine." Before ducking into the woods, he paused, directing a beaming smile back at the tall man as he added on, "I'm Milo, by the way. Keep up! The woods get nasty in some places and you don't wanna get lost."
It was only a few minutes before the Hylian found anything worth trying to hunt. Once they'd passed through a thicket, a rather plump rabbit hopped into the clearing up ahead. Milo stopped, crouching slightly as he silently tugged his hatchet from his belt. The rabbit was completely unaware, even as he hurled the weapon at the rodent. With a dull thunk, it hit its target, and Milo trotted over to take his kill, grinning broadly as he held the rabbit up. "See? Not that hard. You just gotta know where to look for stuff."
After a moment, he held the rabbit out to the man. "Here. You need it, right? I can always find more. I mean, I know these woods like the back of my hand, so it's a cinch for me to get more."

Rheks stayed with the young man as he moved through the entangled forest. With his own height, he was met with low branches and the like, most swatting at his face. He growled silently in frustration while batting them away. He felt the urge to duck low and move swiftly to catch up but he wondered if the other would think he was moving in for the kill. No, instead Rheks held a hand in front of his face and trudged on, ignoring the fauna.
"A pleasure to make your acquaintance Milo, I am Rheks." He said in response to Milo's introduction.
Up at the clearing, Rheks crouched alongside Milo to gaze at the rabbit that had shown itself. He himself looked at the surroundings and thought about how he'd try and catch it. Rabbits were quick when they had to be, so was Rheks and if he had the element of surprise, he could probably impale it upon his blade. However, Milo had a different idea. He flung a weapon at it and the thunk it made only confirmed what he saw, the rabbit had been killed.
As the young man had gone to collect his prize, Rheks stood up and walked after him. He donned a small smile and nodded in acquiescence. When the rabbit was handed towards him, the Gerudo male looked down at it and back at Milo. He wanted Rheks to have it, as he needed it. Apparently Milo could find more if he wanted to. So half-smiling, Rheks received the hare, careful not to get any blood on his hands just yet.
"Thanks. I don't know what I would of done if I hadn't come across you." I probably would have found an encampment or village and raided it. But he didn't say that. Instead...
"Anyways, know a good water source around here? I'm going to need to wash this while I skin it and making camp near a stream or lake would be ideal." He had no gear but he knew how make a fire, as well as cook meat over a campfire.

▲ | Rheks... was certainly an odd name. It didn't sound like any of the local names, but then, this guy was clearly a foreigner so why was he really surprised? Milo found himself wondering just where this guy was from, though, and that was yet another question he was forced to bite back. Prying usually was followed by a request for information in exchange, and he couldn't afford to tell anyone who he was. If the Gerudo found him... he was screwed.
"Thanks. I don't know what I would of done if I hadn't come across you."
"Eh, I'm sure you'da managed. You're all tall and stuff, an' you look like you could figure somethin' out." And if he'd trekked further into the woods, there was no doubt in Milo's mind that he would have found someone who would have given him food and shelter. The Ordonians he knew had been hospitable.
"Anyways, know a good water source around here? I'm going to need to wash this while I skin it and making camp near a stream or lake would be ideal."
"I... well yeah but I wouldn't camp near the rivers." He probably shouldn't be saying this, but sometimes the young Hylian just didn't have a lot of common sense. "The Gerudo tend to camp along the rivers too, an' I dunno if you really wanna tangle with them. They suck, an' if you look at them wrong, they'll try to attack you." It was clear from both his tone and the scowl on his face that Milo was not fond of the ruling race.

He could of managed but he'd rather not think about what he could of done. Had Milo not been so forthcoming about not having food, Rheks probably would have attacked him. The past was the past and there was no need to dwell on it. So he did know where a water supply was, but why wouldn't he camp near it? Rheks was about to ask why not Milo gave an answer anyways.
Gerudo. Heh. That set two thoughts into motion in his mind. The first and foremost, Milo didn't recognize Rheks as a Gerudo himself. He clearly hated them but must not have met a male Gerudo before. That was good, sort of, otherwise Milo would not have been so nice to him to begin with. The second thought, Gerudo nearby meant food supplies and he could kill them for it. Disrupting Ganondorf's soldiers were a favorite pastime of his.
"Really, Gerudo you say? Well, I don't know about you but I'd like to lay a beating on them if they are in the area. If you aren't up for it, could you point me in the direction of water? Gerudo don't frighten me and I'd like to get this thing skinned and cooked before long." Even in his hungered state, he could take a couple of Gerudo but he might take another wound.

Milo just stared, his mouth opening to voice his protest, but nothing came out. This guy is insane. "Are... you're not serious, right? They're Gerudo. Royal Guard? Trained killers? Barbarian soldiers? They're crazy good at fighting an' shit like that. I grew up on a farm. There's no way in hell I'm goin' up against soldiers. I'd get killed before I could do anything."
Never mind the sword on his back or his skill with the hatchet. He was supposed to be the Bearer of Courage, but Milo wasn't afraid to admit that he was terrified of the Gerudo. He might be naive, but he wasn't stupid. He knew his odds against them. It was why he was running in the first place.
"I... look, I dunno how good a fighter you think you are, but you're not gonna last more than five minutes against them. I'm not sending some guy I just met off to his death."

Rheks had half a mind to tell Milo off. When he said he could take some Gerudo, he meant it and didn't like it when others insulted his abilities. Yeah, maybe they might kill him or worse, capture him but at least he would go down fighting. Sometimes he forgot he was destined to face Ganondorf, because he'd rather fight the enemy. He could just walk away and try to make it on his own, he'd be better off alone than with a coward. Still, he could shake this feeling he had. He's been alone for years, maybe he just needs some companionship?
Nah, couldn't be that.
"Ugh, fine, forget that then." Rheks said with an exasperated sigh. "Where do you suggest I go to clean this rabbit? It's going to stink soon and that just might ruin my appetite." Like hell it would but he wanted to pretend it would, so the boy wouldn't give anymore excuses.

Milo perked up slightly at that, nodding as he replied swiftly, "There's a small stream not too far from here. I don't think the Gerudo patrol knows about it, or if they do, they don't go there frequently." Without another word, the Hylian set off, trotting through the forest that was growing denser by the second.
It didn't take long to find the stream - really, it was more of a trickle of water than anything, but it was enough to be able to clean food and get a drink. Turning back toward Rheks, Milo made a sweeping gesture with his hands, grinning as he said, "Here we are. See? Water and no guards to-"
A hand snapped out from behind him, grabbing the back of his collar and yanking him backwards. Milo yelped, staggering back into a Gerudo guard who had just decided to make her presence known. An arm was wrapped around his throat, restricting the air to his lungs, and his left arm was jerked back at an uncomfortable angle. "Thought you could evade us forever, did you?" the woman sneered, a grin on her face as she stared triumphantly down at the significantly shorter Hylian. "We're not stupid. You might be good at running, brat, but we figured out your strategy."
Milo winced, squirming in the woman's grip as he tried to escape. Shit. He was so fucked. He was so fucked! There were probably more guards nearby, and if they knew what he had been doing, he couldn't just hide out in the woods anymore.
That was if he managed to escape. Which... Rheks was still here. He could help, right? He had wanted to fight before. "R-Rheks!"

A small stream not sought out by the Gerudo? If he couldn't have his wish of fighting them for the right to water, a smaller stream would have to do. It didn't really matter which he used, both would supply the water to clean the rabbit as he skinned it and give him something fresh to drink. With a shrug, Rheks followed the young man. It didn't take long until Milo brought him to a smaller than small stream, a trickle of water as some would say. He grimaced slightly at that, totally not what he was expecting. Most would pass by it due to its size but it took a good eye to know it would suffice for most tasks.
Yet as he began crouching down to set the rabbit on the ground, he heard a yelp from above him that he identified as Milo, as he was the only one with him. He threw his head up quickly to see a Gerudo pulling him into a disabling hold. Part of Rheks was glad for some action but the other half was worried for Milo's safety. Most would attack head on in this situation but the female made a mistake, she seemed to not even pay attention, or even notice Rheks. With trained stealthiness, Rheks moved away and around the Gerudo that held Milo. It was better to get the jump on her from behind where it would be nigh impossible for her to see him coming. He caught snatches of what she said, something about Milo evading them. He'd have to have a talk with him about that.
As soon as Milo said his name, Rheks was in position and swiftly moved in to deliver a strike at the Gerudo's neck. It was a straight jab with his fingers extended and rigid, to hit that sweet spot on her neck to knock her unconscious on the spot. He did everything right, she didn't hear him coming. Her thoughts were probably something along the lines of capturing the boy and getting credit for it then a dreamless darkness. His attack struck true and she only let out a soft gasp before crumpling to the ground. Rheks then moved over to help Milo in case he had gotten hurt.
"You okay, Milo?" He only gave the younger man a few moment of his attention before he turned his gaze on the surrounding forest. Where there was one Gerudo, there were probably plenty more patrolling the area. He pondered whether or not they should stay and skin his rabbit. "What do you propose we do now? I have half a mind to remain and get the situation with the rabbit over and done with. It shouldn't take more than a few minutes." He turned and knelt down near the rabbit and drew his scimitar. Without a knife or dagger, he would have to use his sword. |
